Philip Montgomery, MBA'79

(1954-2013)

Educated at St. Mark’s School of Texas, Stanford University and the University of Chicago, Montgomery co-founded and chaired Uplift Education, a pioneering network of preparatory charter schools. He volunteered in landmark bond campaigns for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Dallas Independent School District. He served as a director of the Texas Turnpike Authority and helped create Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

A nature lover, he was Texas Parks and Wildlife commissioner from 2001 to 2008. He also never forgot the small, Hill Country town where his parents took him throughout his boyhood. Fredericksburg fascinated Montgomery, who longed to tell its stories and to publish them in a book, Our Way of Life: Voices of Gillespie County in the 1970s, before he died.
